Nagaland Assembly Refers GDS Employment Issue to Select Committee
Kohima: The Nagaland Assembly has referred the issue of Nagas being ineligible for Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) posts under the Central Postal Department to a select committee for further examination.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio made the proposal in response to concerns raised by NPP MLA Tsielhoutuo Rhutso on Tuesday.
• Recruitment Issue: The GDS recruitment process is conducted online and is based on Class 10 merit. However, Nagaland has not notified any local or state language as a third language, meaning local languages are not part of the selection criteria. This allows applicants from across India, proficient in English and Hindi, to apply.
• Language Barrier: Rio highlighted that outsiders posted in Nagaland struggle to deliver services effectively due to language barriers, depriving citizens of essential postal services and limiting local employment opportunities.
• Need for State Intervention: The CM emphasized the necessity for state intervention to protect the interests of both citizens and the youth.
• Committee Formation: Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer sought the House’s assent, and the proposal was unanimously accepted.
The select committee will now comprehensively examine the issue to explore possible solutions.
