Nagaland-bound Congress Delegations in Jorhat

Guwahati: A delegation of the Congress which was heading towards Mon district to take stock of the situation following the recent tragedy has been detained in Jorhat citing the possibility of a law and order situation.

Chairman of the Media Department of the APCC Bobbeeta Sharma said, “AICC General Secretary in charge Assam, Jitendra Singh along with Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, and Ajoy Kumar (AICC General Secretary) have been barred from going to Nagaland to visit the families of the civilians killed by Assam Rifles.”

She added that they are in sitting in protest against the illegal detention of the Congress delegation at Jorhat and preventing them from traveling to Mon district in Nagaland to meet the families of the victims.

Deputy Commissioner of Jorhat, Ashok Kumar Barman in an order stated, “I satisfied that there are sufficient grounds to prohibit their further movement considering the present sensitive situation at Assam Nagaland border areas and apprehension of breach of peace and tranquillity in the border areas of Jorhat district.”

The order by the Deputy Commissioner stated that considering “their safety” with regards to the prevailing situation in the bordering district of Nagaland and in the exercise of the power conferred upon him under section 144(1) CrPC, has prohibited the visit of the aforesaid delegation of the MPs and others beyond Jorhat Airport unless express permission is given by the Government of Nagaland for entering the State.

The order added, “Considering the urgency in the interest of the safety of the delegation and public peace and tranquility, the order is passed ex-parte under section 144(2) CrPC.”
