Nagaland Braces for Monsoon Fury: State on High Alert as Heavy Rains, Thunderstorms Predicted
Kohima, Nagaland: The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has sounded a statewide alarm, advising citizens to prepare for an intense spell of rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning from July 1 to July 8, 2025. The forecast indicates widespread and heavy to very heavy precipitation across all districts, with particular concern for Kiphire and Tuensang on July 2 and 3, which are expected to bear the brunt of extremely heavy downpours. This weather pattern brings with it considerable risks of lightning strikes, powerful winds, and significant flooding, prompting authorities to urge utmost caution.
The advisory highlights potential disruptions to road transport and overall connectivity, especially in hilly and low-lying regions, due to anticipated landslides and flash floods. Districts such as Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit, and Tuli have been specifically identified as highly vulnerable to waterlogging and flash flood incidents, owing to the high volume of rainfall and runoff from upper areas. The NSDMA has strongly recommended the public avoid open spaces during lightning activity, remain indoors during severe storms, and exercise heightened vigilance while travelling, particularly in these identified high-risk zones.
In response to the impending weather challenges, the Home Department has issued directives to all District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) and relevant line departments, instructing them to maintain a state of high alert. This includes ensuring the readiness of emergency response teams, establishing early warning systems, and having evacuation protocols in place should the situation necessitate them. As the monsoon season gains intensity, the NSDMA has reiterated its appeal for public cooperation and vigilance, emphasising that collective efforts are crucial in minimising potential risks to life and property. Citizens are encouraged to closely monitor and adhere to real-time updates and weather bulletins released by the NSDMA and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for their safety and preparedness.
