Nagaland CM Reaffirms Development Commitment Amid Unresolved Political Issue
Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has reiterated his government’s commitment to development while acknowledging that progress remains constrained by the unresolved Naga political issue.
Speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of Tsiesema Basa village, located 19 km from Kohima, Rio emphasized the need for peace and unity among the Naga people to overcome longstanding challenges.
Addressing the gathering in his home constituency of Northern Angami-II, the chief minister highlighted the ongoing dialogue between the Centre and Naga groups, stressing that while efforts are underway, the absence of a final agreement continues to hinder developmental activities in the state. He asserted that despite multiple proposals, the lack of political resolution has led to delays in central approvals for major projects, stalling Nagaland’s economic growth.
Rio also expressed concerns over the Centre’s reimposition of the Protected Area Regime (PAR), which restricts the free entry of foreign tourists into Nagaland, and the revocation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the India-Myanmar border. He stated that these measures have further impacted trade, connectivity, and economic progress, urging the Centre to reconsider its stance.
“Our government has initiated multiple developmental projects, but due to the unresolved Naga issue, approvals remain limited. We are actively urging the Centre to expedite a solution to facilitate growth,” Rio stated. He revealed that the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, with all 60 members, has collectively appealed for an early resolution, but the Centre has yet to provide a definitive response.
Calling for greater unity among the Naga people, Rio encouraged collective efforts to address the state’s socio-political challenges. He also underscored various government-sponsored welfare schemes, including health insurance programs and microfinance loans, aimed at empowering youth, entrepreneurs, and small businesses.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to economic progress, Rio urged the Union government to reconsider restrictive policies like PAR and FMR, which he believes are hampering Nagaland’s growth and regional connectivity.
