Nagaland Congress Calls Off Agitation Following Government Apology Over Palm Sunday Order
The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) announced it has withdrawn its planned agitation, a decision made after the State Government issued a formal expression of regret. The controversy stemmed from an administrative transfer and posting order released on April 13, 2025, which coincided with Palm Sunday, a day of profound religious significance for the Christian community in Nagaland.
In a released statement, the NPCC acknowledged the government’s explanation that the timing of the order was unintentional. Nevertheless, the party strongly criticized the incident, describing it as indicative of a “serious lack of awareness and sensitivity” concerning the religious sentiments prevalent within the state.
Despite calling off the planned protests, the NPCC issued a stern warning to the government, urging them to exercise greater caution in the future. Specifically, they demanded that the government refrain from issuing any official notifications or implementing administrative actions on days of religious importance. “Any deviation—even if expressly stated to be unintentional—is unacceptable,” the statement reiterated, emphasizing the need for heightened respect for religious observances.
The NPCC further alleged that this incident aligns with what they perceive as the BJP’s broader strategy to undermine India’s secular principles. They cautioned the people of Nagaland to remain vigilant against any actions that might erode the state’s religious and cultural fabric.
Concluding their statement, the NPCC reaffirmed its dedication to holding the state government accountable and ensuring that the religious and cultural sensitivities of Nagaland are consistently respected.
