Nagaland Congress Launches ‘Samvidhan Bachao’ Movement, Alleges Constitutional Erosion

Kohima: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) initiated the ‘Samvidhan Bachao’ (Save Constitution) movement on Monday, convening a conclave at Congress Bhavan to galvanize public consciousness regarding the safeguarding of constitutional rights. The event drew significant attention, featuring notable party figures such as AICC Secretary-in-Charge for Nagaland, Christopher Tilak, and Lok Sabha MP and NPCC president, S Supongmeren Jamir.

Following the conclave, a press conference was held where party leaders articulated deep apprehensions about the perceived deterioration of constitutional standards under the incumbent BJP-led central government. Christopher Tilak asserted, “This Constitution was built on the vision of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and B R Ambedkar, and the Congress party has protected it for decades. Today, it is under direct threat from the BJP and the RSS.” He further charged the BJP with systematically weakening democratic structures, particularly within northeastern states such as Manipur and Nagaland, alleging a surge in administrative overreach.

NPCC working president, C Apok Jamir, voiced criticism over what he described as the biased deployment of investigative bodies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED). “This is a direct infringement of individual rights and a serious threat to democracy,” he declared.

S Supongmeren Jamir specifically targeted central government policies including ‘One Nation, One Language,’ ‘One Nation, One Election,’ and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), arguing that these initiatives “are designed to dismantle the pluralistic fabric of the country.”

NPCC vice president, G K Zhimomi, accused the BJP of “misappropriating Ambedkar’s legacy while undermining the very constitutional principles he helped establish.”

The Congress party has outlined an extensive campaign strategy for the forthcoming weeks, which includes door-to-door engagements, district-level programs, and comprehensive grassroots mobilisation efforts across Nagaland, aimed at amplifying their message and bolstering public support for the ‘Samvidhan Bachao’ movement.
