Nagaland Congress Responds to K. Therie’s Criticism of PAC Resolution
Northeast Desk, 19th September: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has issued a strong rebuttal to former president K. Therie’s critique of the September 12 Political Affairs Committee (PAC) resolution on the Naga political issue. Therie had labeled the resolution as “futile and a waste,” prompting a firm response from the NPCC.
In a statement, Yanger Longkumer, Chairperson of the NPCC Communications Department, acknowledged that while Therie’s concerns may have some validity, the resolution’s objectives of fostering consensus, transparency, and inclusivity are essential. Longkumer stressed that the NPCC’s participation in the PAC meeting was driven by the desire to ensure that details of agreements between the Central government and Naga political groups (NPGs) are accessible to PAC members and civil society. This approach aims to enhance the consultative process and political dialogue.
The NPCC underscored the significance of the agreements and the efforts by successive Central governments to resolve the Naga political issue. However, they clarified that their role is not directly involved in the ongoing negotiations, which limits their ability to influence the final resolution.
Despite these constraints, the NPCC affirmed its readiness to contribute when called upon by the negotiating parties. They also urged the Central government to honor and implement the agreements with the NPGs promptly. On the issue of appointing a new political interlocutor, the NPCC advised against attaching negative connotations to the role, advocating instead for effective coordination and accountability to avoid complicating the already intricate issue.
