Nagaland Congress: “Urban Local Body Elections Should be Nonpartisan”

Guwahati: Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) demanded in a letter to the state’s chief minister Neiphiu Rio that the state’s urban local bodies (ULBs) be elected democratically and without regard to party affiliation.

According to NPCC President K Therie’s letter, political parties won’t be nominating their candidates and the concerned wards will be permitted to select moral leaders through consensus and cooperation.

Therie further asserted that Nagaland’s native culture of non-partisan elections was observed in several areas during village council elections.

”This type of election was generally held in municipal, country officer, and school boards and was also common in the election of judges. There were a few nations too that followed this system,” the Congress leader claimed.

Therie further urged the Chief Minister to look into other resources in addition to abolishing the housing and property tax.

The State Election Commission (SEC) of Nagaland recently stated that it will hold elections for 39 Urban Local Bodies (ULB) on May 16 for the first time in over 20 years with 33% of the seats reserved for women, one of the contentious topics cited as the cause of the situation.
