Nagaland Declares Paid Holiday for Workers on ULB Election Day

Northeast Desk, 26th June: In a move to ensure widespread voter participation, the Labour Commissioner of Nagaland declared a paid holiday for workers employed in commercial and industrial establishments for the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections held on June 26.

The Labour Department issued a directive mandating employers to compensate their employees with wages equivalent to their daily average earnings for the election day, prohibiting any deductions from workers’ wages on this account.

This decision comes amid extensive preparations for the significant electoral event, with 523 candidates competing across various municipal and town councils in Nagaland. The State Election Commission (SEC) detailed the participation figures for each council, highlighting significant contests across the state.

  • Dimapur Municipal Council: 56 candidates
  • East Dimapur Town Council: 16 candidates
  • Niuland Town Council: 14 candidates
  • Chümoukedima Town Council: 28 candidates
  • Medziphema Town Council: 20 candidates
  • Kohima Municipal Council: 35 candidates
  • Peren Town Council: 14 candidates
  • Julukie Town Council: 20 candidates
  • Zunheboto Town Council: 28 candidates
  • Mokokchung Municipal Council: 29 candidates
  • Tseminyu Town Council: 29 candidates

Additionally, 64 candidates from 21 municipal and town councils have been elected unopposed, underscoring the significant number of uncontested seats in this electoral cycle.
