Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Assures No Reports of Illegal Immigrants Amid Bangladesh Crisis

Northeast Desk, 29th August: On Thursday, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton addressed concerns in the state Assembly regarding potential illegal Bangladeshi immigration due to the political crisis in Bangladesh. Patton responded to NPF MLA Achumbemo Kikon, who had raised fears about the influx of illegal immigrants into Nagaland through neighboring states.

Patton, who oversees the Home portfolio, clarified that Nagaland does not share a direct border with Bangladesh, unlike states such as West Bengal and Assam. He reassured the Assembly that, despite the North East region’s general vulnerability to such issues, there have been no reports of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants entering Nagaland.

He explained that any potential influx would likely come through Assam. To mitigate risks, the Nagaland government is closely monitoring the situation with intelligence and security agencies. District administrations bordering Assam have been directed to hold regular security coordination meetings and intensify checks at inter-state borders.

Measures include heightened Inner Line Permit checks, increased vigilance at check posts, and enhanced surveillance by state police along the 13 inter-state borders. The police are also instructed to conduct intensified vehicle inspections and monitor places of worship to ensure security.

Patton emphasized that the state is well-prepared and actively working to prevent any illegal influx, addressing public concerns and ensuring that all necessary precautions are in place.
