Nagaland: Dimapur Gears Up for Eviction Drive with Prohibitory Order
Dimapur: A palpable sense of anticipation hangs over Dimapur as authorities prepare for the scheduled eviction of illegal encroachments on Dimapur Airport land. In a pre-emptive measure to ensure a smooth and peaceful operation, the Dimapur police have clamped down with a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the recently enacted Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
The directive, issued by Commissioner of Police Kevithuto Sophie, IPS, is a direct response to instructions from the Office of the Commissioner, Nagaland, and a ruling by the Gauhati High Court dated May 27, 2025. This legal backing underscores the seriousness with which the administration is approaching the long-pending issue of land encroachment.
Citing a “reasonable apprehension of resistance or physical obstruction” that could potentially jeopardise public safety and order, the ban explicitly prohibits the assembly of five or more individuals. Furthermore, the carrying of any lethal or dangerous weapons, including but not limited to lathis, daggers, and spears, has been strictly forbidden within the designated zone.
The restricted geographical area is clearly demarcated, extending from the Chathe River/Nihoto in the east to the Airport boundary in the west, encompassing Ekranipathar in the north, and stretching down to Diphupar (173 Battalion CRPF Camp) in the south. This wide-ranging restriction aims to contain any potential unrest and facilitate the eviction process without incident.
The prohibitory order came into effect at 8:00 PM on June 12 and is slated to remain in force until 6:00 PM on June 13, unless circumstances allow for an earlier revocation. Local authorities have earnestly appealed to all citizens and visitors within the affected areas to extend their full cooperation, emphasising the importance of maintaining peace and order during this critical period.
