Nagaland: Forest Fire Near Japfu Christian College Raises Alarm in Kohima
Kohima – A rapidly spreading forest fire erupted near Japfu Christian College in Nagaland’s Kohima district on February 13, sparking concerns among locals and environmentalists.
The fire, which began around 11:30 AM, is threatening Mt. Shüho/Shüho Peak, a biodiversity hotspot renowned for its rare red rhododendrons and orchids.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unconfirmed, officials suspect it may have originated from jhum cultivation—a traditional slash-and-burn farming practice. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as flames continue to spread across the rugged mountainous terrain.
Inspector Kelesa, officer-in-charge of the Fire & Emergency Services Department at Kohima (South) Station, confirmed that a report was received around noon, prompting fire tenders to be dispatched. However, the challenging topography of the region, located 13 km from Kohima in the southern Angami area, has made it difficult for firefighting teams to reach all affected spots.
“We managed to control the fire in areas accessible by fire tenders, but the risk remains high,” Kelesa stated.
Local leaders have expressed grave concern over the potential devastation. Kigwema village council chairman Balie Kere warned that if not contained swiftly, the fire could *spread downward into inhabited areas or neighboring villages, leading to severe environmental and economic damage.
Authorities and community volunteers are closely monitoring the situation as efforts continue to prevent further escalation.
