Nagaland: Former NPF Candidate Surrenders to Police Following Worker’s Death
Northeast Desk, 18th October: In a shocking incident, Moasangba Jamir, the former candidate of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) party and current NPF Mokokchung Division President, surrendered himself to the Mokokchung police after an incident resulting in the death of one of his workers.
The Mokokchung police received information about the incident at approximately 4:30 pm on Tuesday, October 17, 2023. According to reports, Moasangba Jamir accidentally shot one of his workers with a .22 rifle gun at his resort, situated in Chuchuyimpang village, a short distance from Mokokchung town.
The incident reportedly stemmed from an altercation between two workers at the resort. One of them sought help and protection from Jamir as the other was allegedly chasing him with a machete. In an attempt to halt the altercation, Jamir blank fired his gun, inadvertently striking the other worker in the left chest, causing a fatal injury.
Following the incident, Moasangba Jamir voluntarily surrendered himself to the police and is currently in police custody. The deceased, identified as Longshang Konyak from Longching village in Mon district, was an employee at Metsuben Resort, owned by Jamir.
Mokokchung Police is collecting statements from eyewitnesses, and an investigation is underway to determine whether the incident is a murder case or an accidental death. As of now, no First Information Report (FIR) has been filed, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled for the following day.
The Chuchuyimpang Village Council had a meeting with the 7 Eastern Tribe Union Mokokchung, the Eastern Naga People’s Organisation (ENPO), Mokokchung around 10:30 PM at Metsuben Resort. The council acknowledged the accused’s involvement in the incident, stating it was an unfortunate occurrence and appealing for forgiveness for the accused. The decision to forgive the accused will be made after consultation with the deceased’s family, clan, and the village council.
The Konyak Union Mokokchung will hold a meeting following the arrival of the deceased’s younger brother from Kohima. More updates are expected after the meeting, along with additional details from the police.
