Nagaland: Global Naga Forum Accuses Assam Rifles of Privacy Breach via WhatsApp Surveillance
Nagaland: The Global Naga Forum (GNF) has leveled serious allegations against the *Assam Rifles, accusing the paramilitary force of unlawfully infiltrating a private WhatsApp group used by the organization. In an open letter addressed to *Major General Manish Kumar, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North), the GNF expressed deep concern over what they claim is a violation of their constitutional rights to privacy and freedom of speech.
The forum specifically accused Major Narendra, stationed at Avangkhu in Nagaland, of covertly embedding himself within their messaging group for more than five months. During this period, the GNF alleges that Major Narendra monitored internal discussions and collected sensitive information. The group claims the officer was only identified and removed after his actions were uncovered by forum members.
Describing the incident as a “serious infringement” of their rights, the GNF emphasized that their organization is committed to promoting peace, unity, and human rights, and condemned any attempts to surveil or target them for their advocacy work. The forum urged the leadership of the Assam Rifles to take immediate action and uphold accountability for the breach of trust and privacy.
This incident adds a new layer of tension to the already sensitive relationship between security forces and civil society in the Northeast region, where the Assam Rifles plays a critical role in border management and counter-insurgency operations. The GNF’s allegations raise concerns about the balance between security measures and the protection of civil liberties in the region.
