Nagaland Government Considers Renaming Welfare Schemes to Honor Former CM Vamuzo
Phek – The Nagaland government is exploring the possibility of naming key social welfare schemes after former Chief Minister Vamuzo, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced on Saturday. Speaking at a function marking the 25th death anniversary of Vamuzo in Yoruba village, Phek district, Rio stated that the government would deliberate on renaming initiatives like the Village Development Board (VDB) and the Compact Area Development Scheme (CADS), which were introduced during Vamuzo’s tenure.
The Compact Area Development Scheme, now known as the Local Area Development Programme (LADP), was one of Vamuzo’s significant contributions to rural development. Rio emphasized that these schemes represent the late leader’s enduring legacy and cannot be forgotten. He acknowledged that the renaming process would require formal procedures and discussions before any decision is made.
The proposal to honor Vamuzo’s legacy by renaming these schemes follows an appeal from the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), the apex body representing Vamuzo’s tribe. Vamuzo served as Nagaland’s Chief Minister from 1990 to 1992, and his policies have had a lasting impact on community welfare and rural development.
Rio further highlighted Vamuzo’s commitment to protecting Naga identity and special constitutional provisions. He asserted that only a regional political party could safeguard the protections granted to the Nagas under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873 and Article 371A of the Constitution, which ensures special rights for the state.
Recalling his personal connection with Vamuzo, Rio shared that their association dates back to 1974 when he was a youth leader with the United Democratic Front (UDF). He described Vamuzo as a man of integrity, a leader of the masses, and someone who had genuine empathy for the people.
The event was attended by several prominent leaders, including former Chief Minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu, reflecting the widespread respect for Vamuzo’s contributions to Nagaland’s social and political landscape.
