Nagaland: Government Employees in state Protest, Demand Restoration of Old Pension Scheme

Northeast Desk, 17th February: A significant number of government employees in Nagaland took to the streets on Friday, rallying for the scrapping of the ‘new pension scheme’ and the restoration of the earlier system.

Employees recruited after 2010, when the new pension scheme was introduced, gathered at the civil secretariat junction under the Nagaland National Pension System Government Service Employees’ Forum (NNPSGSEF).

NNPSGSEF president Moanungsang stated that the “peaceful dharna” aimed to express solidarity with the “national strike” organized by the All India State Government Employees Federation (AISGEF).

Despite submitting a representation to the state government in September 2023, the forum has received no response.

According to NNPSGSEF, the old pension scheme offered social security with guaranteed lifetime reasonable pensions, unlike the new scheme, which provides lower monthly pensions to long-surviving pensioners and lacks social security provisions.

Earlier, Sikkim became the first northeastern Indian state to reinstate the old pension scheme, benefiting state government employees appointed on or after April 1, 2006. The decision, outlined in the provisions of the Sikkim Services (Pension) Rules, 1990, will benefit employees appointed on or before March 31, 1990, reinstating guidelines on pension system modalities.

This announcement coincides with a series of welfare measures aimed at benefiting the people of Sikkim, announced during the State Level Temporary Employees’ Convention held at Public Ground Rangpo on February 9, 2024.
