Nagaland Government to Collaborate with Northeastern States on Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing

Northeast Desk, 24th January: Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton revealed that the Nagaland government plans to engage in discussions with other northeastern states sharing the border with Myanmar concerning the recent decision by the Centre to fence the international border. Patton made this statement while attending a program at the police headquarters on Monday.

In response to inquiries about Nagaland’s stance and the recent meeting between the Nagaland government and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also serves as the Convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance, in Dimapur, Patton conveyed that the Nagaland government intends to confer with other northeastern states that share the Indo-Myanmar border before approaching the Centre.

“We will be discussing the matter of fencing the border with other northeastern states and then approach the Centre regarding the Union government’s decision to seal the Indo-Myanmar border,” he affirmed.

Meanwhile, Nagaland’s Director General of Police (DGP), Rupin Sharma, indicated that the state government seeks to convey its perspectives on managing the border and the free movement regime. Apart from providing insights, the state aims to enhance the regulation of the Indo-Myanmar border, giving due consideration to national security and addressing the emotions and sentiments of the people residing along the border.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had announced on Saturday that the Centre has resolved to fence the entire India-Myanmar border to curb the unrestricted movement of people.
