Nagaland Government to Engage with PM, Home Minister, and Assam CM Over Border Dispute

Northeast: The Nagaland government is set to initiate high-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to address the ongoing border dispute with Assam, as announced by Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton.

During a visit to Tuli in the Mokokchung district, which shares a border with Assam, Patton emphasized the state government’s commitment to resolving the issue.

The Deputy CM was accompanied by local MLA A Pangjung Jamir, DGP Rupin Sharma, and officials from the district administration.

The team conducted an inspection of critical areas, including the Assam Police Commando Battalion camp at Septsuyong Lu in Kangtsung village and Wameken Yimsen village, to assess the situation on the ground.

The visit aimed to engage with local stakeholders and address rising tensions in the border areas, according to an official statement.

During discussions with villagers and representatives of Ao Senden, the apex tribal body of the district, Patton highlighted that the state cabinet had deliberated on the matter during its October 9 meeting, reaffirming the government’s serious approach to resolving the dispute.

He assured the villagers that letters had been sent to the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Assam CM to schedule talks on the issue soon.

Additionally, Patton urged the local community not to sell their land to non-indigenous people, stressing the importance of preserving local land ownership.

The Nagaland-Assam border spans 512.1 km, and both states have long accused each other of occupying land within the Disputed Area Belt. The matter remains under review in the Supreme Court, where a case has been ongoing for several years.
