Nagaland Government to Review Key Legislation in Upcoming Monsoon Session
Northeast Desk, 23rd August: The Nagaland government has announced plans to review two significant laws during the state Assembly’s upcoming monsoon session, scheduled from August 27 to 29. The laws under scrutiny include the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act of 1989 and the communitisation programme in the power sector.
In a recent cabinet meeting held at the Chief Minister’s Office, Minister and Government Spokesperson K.G. Kenye revealed that the government is considering revising the liquor prohibition law, which has been in force for over three decades. The review aims to address the evolving needs of society and ensure that the law remains effective in the current context.
The cabinet also discussed the potential repeal of the communitisation programme in the power sector. This programme, introduced to enhance efficiency, implemented a single-point metering system and delegated the responsibility for power tariff collection to village authorities. The review will consider whether the programme continues to serve its intended purpose or if changes are needed to improve the state’s power sector.
These discussions are expected to lead to significant decisions during the Assembly session, with potential implications for both the state’s legal framework and its approach to power sector management.
