Nagaland Governor La Ganesan Calls for Youth-Led Compassion on World Red Cross Day

Kohima: Governor of Nagaland and President of the Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland State Branch, La Ganesan, delivered a powerful message of empathy and action at a special gathering held at the Red Cross Complex in Kohima to mark World Red Cross Day.

Centered around this year’s theme, “Through Humanity to Peace,” the Governor’s address called for deeper compassion, early empathy education, and active youth involvement in humanitarian efforts.

Praising the unwavering commitment of Red Cross volunteers, particularly those serving in Nagaland’s disaster-prone and remote regions, Governor Ganesan declared their work as more than service—it is, he said, “a testament to the power of collective compassion.” He lauded the Red Cross members for embodying values of hope, kindness, and empathy that become vital lifelines during times of crisis.

Turning his focus to the youth, the Governor issued a heartfelt call for participation in humanitarian causes. “You are not just the leaders of tomorrow; you are the changemakers of today,” he said, highlighting that urgent global challenges—ranging from climate change to inequality—require the idealism and energy of young people. He also stressed that empathy must be instilled from an early age, both at home and within the education system, to nurture a future driven by compassion.

Quoting Red Cross founder Henry Dunant, Ganesan reminded attendees of the simple yet profound human duty at the heart of the movement: “We are neither angels nor saints, but human beings who try to do what we can, for as long as we can.”

The commemorative event included a warm welcome by Jonas Yanthan, thematic reflections by Dr. R. Rose Chakhesang, and the Secretary General’s message read by Akhale V. Khamo. Dr. Theyiephrezo James Solo extended words of thanks, and Vice Chairperson Helena Yepthomi chaired the session. A special performance by Bayavu English School students added a vibrant note to the occasion.

The celebration stood as a collective call to uphold humanitarian values and build a more peaceful and empathetic society, led by dedicated volunteers and empowered youth.
