Nagaland Govt Halves Deadline for Committee Probing Assistant Professors’ Regularisation Amid Mounting Pressure

Kohima: Facing mounting pressure from student and aspirant groups, the Nagaland government on Monday, April 28, moved swiftly to curtail the timeframe granted to a high-level committee tasked with reviewing the controversial regularisation of 147 assistant professors under the Higher Education Department.

The decision came just ahead of planned agitations, which groups had announced would begin on April 29.

The government convened multiple high-level meetings throughout the day, including a Cabinet session and consultations with major stakeholders such as the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Combined Technical Aspirants of Nagaland (CTAN), and the Nagaland NET Qualified Forum (NNQF).

Following these deliberations, Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang informed the media that the Cabinet had taken serious note of demands to revoke the contentious April 21 regularisation order and calls for the suspension of the High Power Committee (HPC) overseeing the issue. As a result, the committee’s original deadline of eight weeks has now been cut down to four weeks, expediting the timeline for resolution.

Zeliang, accompanied by Minister K.G. Kenye and Chief Secretary J. Alam, also held back-to-back meetings with NSF, CTAN, and NNQF representatives. Government officials assured the stakeholders that the matter was being taken seriously and reiterated their commitment to a transparent review process. Authorities pledged to take concrete action based on the HPC’s findings once the shortened timeframe concludes.
