Nagaland: Indefinite Bandh Declared on National Highway Passing Through Wokha District

Northeast Desk, 7th February: Top Civil Society Organizations in Wokha district, along with the Joint Action Committee formed by various bodies of Wokha village, have declared an indefinite bandh on the National Highway passing through Wokha district, effective from 6:00 AM on February 8.

This decision follows the expiration of a 5-day ultimatum issued to the Deputy Commissioner of Wokha on February 1, urging the resumption of construction works along the stretch of NH-2 (Old NH-61) from KM 72.40 to KM 83.00 in Wokha.

The groups involved in this action include Lotha Hoho, Lotha Eloe Hoho, Lotha Students’ Union, Wokha District Village Council Chairmen Association, Wokha Town Colonies’ Chairmen Union, and All Commercial Vehicle Association, Wokha.

In a press release, they expressed disappointment over the failure of authorities, including the District Administration, State Department of National Highways, and the contractor, TTC Infra India, to resume the works within the specified timeframe.

During the bandh period, the entry of vehicles from other districts into Wokha district is prohibited. Citizens intending to travel through the district are advised to adjust their travel plans accordingly. However, intra-district vehicular movement is permitted except for government-registered vehicles.

Certain exceptions have been made for essential services, including police, paramilitary forces, medical services such as ambulances and private cars carrying patients or deceased individuals, fire and emergency services, postal services, and the press.

The bandh will remain in force until authorities address the groups’ demands, which include resolving various grievances communicated through previous correspondences and negotiations and immediately resuming the halted work.
