Nagaland: Kohima Administration Bans Killing of Animals, Including Stray Dogs

Kohima: The Kohima administration has issued a firm directive prohibiting individuals, organisations, and associations from killing animals, including stray dogs, within the district.

This comes in response to recent instances where certain organisations and associations in Kohima’s municipal wards and villages issued ‘shoot-at-sight’ orders for stray dogs.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, Rhosietho Nguori, announced the order, stating that such actions are a violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Bharatiya Naya Sanhita (BNS). Both legislations categorically prohibit the killing of animals, including strays, deeming such acts illegal under the law.

The directive urges citizens to report stray dogs to the municipal or town council authorities in urban areas or the respective village authorities in rural regions. These authorities, with assistance from the Chief Veterinary Office, are tasked with handling stray animals in accordance with established legal procedures.

The administration has also warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found violating the order, underscoring the government’s commitment to upholding animal welfare laws. This move aims to ensure humane treatment of animals while addressing concerns related to strays in a lawful and ethical manner.
