Kohima: Nagaland’s Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) carried out extensive on-site inspections across four landslide-affected areas on July 9, following heavy pre-dawn rainfall that triggered slope failures and structural damage in the city.
The inspection drive began at the PHQ junction, where two vehicles were damaged and a portion of a boundary wall collapsed due to the landslide. Councillor Medovinuo Martin Suohu confirmed that reconstruction work is already in progress, with the PHQ department actively engaged in rebuilding the wall and addressing adjacent structural vulnerabilities.
Led by the Chairman, Deputy Chairman, and local councillors, the KMC team visited key affected sites including Mezhür, Ura, and Razhu Point—areas that have gained traction on social media due to visible damage. At Razhu Point, officials assured that the damaged portion near the bridge will be repaired once the area is cleared of construction materials and current projects are completed.
The team also identified clogged and inadequate drainage systems as contributing factors to the landslides and promised prompt remedial action to improve runoff management and reduce future risks.
During interactions with local residents and shopkeepers, officials emphasized the importance of maintaining clean surroundings to minimize the impact of extreme weather events. The inspection concluded with a visit to the High School area, rounding off a day-long operation focused on damage assessment, response planning, and community outreach.
