Nagaland: Massive Landslide in Kohima Leaves 20 Families Homeless

Northeast Desk, 27th July: Heavy rains have triggered a massive landslide in Kohima’s Pezielietsie Colony, located in Ward-3 North Block, causing significant damage to at least four houses and partially affecting adjacent properties. The incident has rendered at least 20 families homeless, according to officials.

Newly-elected councillors of the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), led by Chairman Neikhozo Suokhrie and Deputy Chairman Khrielievie Chusi, visited the affected area to assess the damage. Expressing serious concern over the incident, Suokhrie identified the area as a sinking zone and announced that the KMC would initiate a pilot project for constructing a retaining wall and drainage system, in consultation with the state government.

Ruokuovolie Rutsa, the councillor for the affected ward, noted that such a massive landslide had not occurred in the area since 2017. He highlighted the efforts of local residents in assisting the displaced families during this crisis.

This landslide highlights the urgent need for infrastructural improvements in vulnerable areas to prevent future incidents and safeguard residents’ homes and lives.
