Nagaland MP Phangnon Konyak Appointed to NEHU Court, Calls It a “Jubilant Moment”

Kohima: Nagaland’s Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak has been appointed as a member of the Court of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), the highest decision-making body of the central university based in Meghalaya. The announcement was confirmed by university officials and warmly received by the MP, who shared her excitement on social media.

Taking to her official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Konyak described the appointment as a “jubilant moment” and expressed her gratitude to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for the nomination. “A jubilant moment for me as I have been nominated as a Member to the Court of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU),” she posted, adding her appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to one of the region’s most prominent academic institutions.

Konyak, a BJP leader, holds the distinction of being the first woman from Nagaland to be elected to the Rajya Sabha. She highlighted NEHU’s pivotal role in shaping generations of scholars and leaders from the Northeast. “Over the years, the varsity has nurtured and produced distinguished academicians, bureaucrats, public leaders, and change makers,” she said, urging all stakeholders to “collectively ‘Rise Up and Build’, as the University’s motto so aptly inspires us.”

Founded in 1973, NEHU originally held jurisdiction over Meghalaya, Nagaland, and the former Union Territories of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. The university has been under public scrutiny in recent times following student protests and calls for institutional reform. Konyak’s appointment to the Court of NEHU is seen as a strategic move to strengthen regional representation and foster academic governance.
