Nagaland: Naga Students’ Federation Raises Alarm Over Illegal Immigration Threat

Northeast Desk, 7th September: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has issued a grave warning about the escalating crisis in Bangladesh, which they claim is causing a significant influx of illegal immigrants into Nagaland. The NSF has called the situation an “existential threat” to the Naga homeland, stating that it poses a direct risk to the region’s identity, culture, and future.

In a strongly-worded statement, the NSF expressed its concern over reports of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants already entering the state, raising fears of a mass exodus spilling over into Nagaland. The Federation insists that this demographic shift threatens to dilute Naga culture and way of life, and vows not to remain passive.

The NSF urged its Federating Units and subordinate bodies to rigorously monitor and curb the inflow of illegal immigrants, calling vigilance a “matter of survival.” “Reports of these immigrants creeping into our state must be met with immediate action,” the release stated, calling upon the Naga community to report any suspicious activities.

In a pointed message, the NSF demanded that Naga Political Groups refrain from interfering with the Federation’s efforts to protect the homeland, warning that any group providing patronage or shelter to non-locals must cease immediately. The NSF emphasized that this is not a time for political maneuvering, but rather a moment to unite against a common threat.

The NSF also criticized the Nagaland government for its inaction, noting that despite multiple representations, the most recent on February 28, 2024, no decisive steps have been taken. The Federation has now demanded that the Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime be implemented in the districts of Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland within 14 days, warning that failure to do so would be seen as a failure to protect the Naga people.

The NSF reiterated that it will closely monitor the situation and is prepared to take further action if the government fails to enforce the ILP regime. The Federation called upon all individuals, organizations, and government entities to recognize the seriousness of the threat and act swiftly to defend the Naga homeland.
