Nagaland Police to Recruit 935 Constables Following High Court Ruling

Kohima— Nagaland’s Director General of Police, Rupin Sharma, announced today that the state will initiate the recruitment process for 935 police constables in the wake of a recent ruling by the Gauhati High Court. The court quashed the previous appointments made between January 2018 and October 2019, citing a lack of proper advertisement for the positions as the primary reason.

Speaking to reporters during an official program, Sharma emphasized that the High Court’s decision underscores the need for transparency and legality in the recruitment process. “We will advertise it in due course for fresh recruitments,” he stated, indicating that the police department is prepared to comply with the court’s directives.

The court’s ruling, delivered by Justice Devashis Baruah on September 20, followed a writ petition filed by unemployed youths from Nagaland in 2022. The petitioners argued that the appointments had been conducted without adequately publicizing the vacancies, thus violating the principles of fair recruitment. As part of its directive, the court mandated that the state government conduct a new selection process within six months, including the issuance of advertisements in widely circulated newspapers throughout the state.

While the recruitment process is set to begin, Sharma noted that individuals affected by the previous appointments still have legal avenues available to them. “These individuals may file an appeal, a review, or a revision petition with the Gauhati High Court (GHC) Kohima Bench, the GHC Principal Bench, or even the Supreme Court,” he explained.

He also mentioned that while the police department will undertake the administrative steps as required, they will await any potential favorable orders for the constables affected by the court’s decision.

The announcement marks a significant step in addressing the staffing needs of the Nagaland police force while ensuring that the recruitment process adheres to judicial mandates and legal standards.
