Nagaland: Pungro Administration Announces Comprehensive Ban on Select Single-Use Plastics

Kohima: In a significant step towards environmental conservation, James T. Khulu Tikhir, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Pungro in Nagaland, has declared a complete prohibition on several single-use plastic (SUP) items. The ban is set to come into effect on May 1, 2025.

The decisive action aligns with directives previously issued by the Office of the Commissioner, Nagaland, and the Urban Development Department, signaling a unified approach towards tackling plastic waste across the state.

The specific items targeted by this ban include all forms of single-use plastic carry bags, irrespective of their thickness or micron measurement. Additionally, plastic bottles used for water and soft drinks with a capacity of less than one litre are also included in the prohibition.

The enforcement of this order will be widespread, encompassing various sectors within the jurisdiction of the Pungro Town Council. This includes educational institutions, both government and private offices, all commercial establishments such as shops, hotels, and restaurants, religious organizations, industrial units, and banquet halls.

Stringent penalties await those found in violation of the new regulations. A fine of ₹10,000 will be levied for the first offence, which will be doubled to ₹20,000 for a second transgression. Repeated violations could potentially lead to the cancellation of relevant permits, underscoring the seriousness with which the administration is treating this issue.

This proactive measure is primarily aimed at mitigating the growing problem of plastic pollution in the region and fostering a greater reliance on environmentally friendly substitutes. The authorities have appealed to all residents, businesses, and organizations to extend their complete cooperation and actively participate in this initiative to create a cleaner and more sustainable Pungro for the future.
