Nagaland Strengthens ILP Mechanism to Combat Illegal Immigration
Northeast Desk, 10th September: Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton chaired a crucial meeting at Rhododendron Hall, Chümoukedima, emphasizing the state’s commitment to enhancing the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system as a key measure against illegal immigration.
During the meeting, which focused on safeguarding the state’s demographic integrity and cultural identity, Patton clarified that while the ILP regulates legal entry into Nagaland, illegal immigration poses a distinct threat. He identified Dimapur as a major transit point, revealing that 93 illegal immigrants had been arrested since January, with 43 detained in August alone.
The ILP Implementation Committee, chaired by Patton, has finalized its report, and decisions will be made after consultations with civil society organizations. Patton urged for public cooperation and patience as new measures are implemented.
Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma assured improvements in the ILP monitoring system, including the introduction of online applications, to enhance enforcement. Civil society groups stressed the importance of effective ILP enforcement in Dimapur, Niuland, and Chümoukedima to prevent an identity crisis in the state.
