Nagaland: Tokheho Yepthomi Resigns from NDPP, Congratulates Successor
Northeast Desk, 6th June: Tokheho Yepthomi, the lone Lok Sabha MP from Nagaland and member of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), has announced his resignation from the primary and active membership of the party in Nagaland.
Expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and NDPP president Chingwang Konyak for the opportunity to contest the 2018 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Yepthomi also thanked the members of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly who supported his candidature. He particularly acknowledged the voters of Nagaland, especially those in Mon district, for electing him for two consecutive terms.
In light of his resignation, Yepthomi extended his congratulations to Dr. Chumben Murry, the PDA consensus candidate nominated for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. He expressed his best wishes for Murry as he assumes the responsibility, praying for divine blessings upon him.
Notably, the resignation comes shortly after the historic victory of the Congress party in Nagaland, winning the lone Lok Sabha seat after a gap of 20 years. Congress candidate S Supongmeren Jamir secured victory, defeating Chumben Murry of the NDPP, a BJP ally, by a significant margin of 50,984 votes, as confirmed by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
With this victory, the Congress party breaks a two-decade-long drought in Nagaland’s Lok Sabha representation, marking a significant political shift in the state. Despite not having any MLAs in the state assembly, the Congress candidate emerged victorious, signaling a changing political landscape in Nagaland.
