Nagaland: Unprecedented Rainfall in Shamator District Leads to Severe Damage

Northeast Desk, 24th April: Deputy Commissioner Y. Chingyak Konyak has reported extensive damage in Shamator district following unprecedented rainfall on April 19 and 20. Ten villages in the district are completely cut off as a result of the downpour.

According to Konyak, the rainfall has severely disrupted power and cellular connectivity, while numerous culverts and minor bridges have been washed away. Landslides and mudslides have rendered most roads impassable, with major bridges facing significant damage.

Of particular concern are the Langa bridge, connecting Shamator headquarters with Tuensang; the Muksuke bridge, linking Chessore sub-division with Tuensang; and the Shipong bridge, connecting Shamator headquarters with Mangko EAC circle. These bridges are reportedly on the brink of collapse.

The aftermath of the rainfall has also seen the destruction of hundreds of terrace fields and fisheries. Additionally, many vehicles returning from election duty remain stranded in various parts of the district.

While the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is actively involved in restoration efforts, Konyak highlighted the challenges posed by a lack of machinery and resources. This shortage has significantly impeded road clearance and other essential restoration work in the district.
