Nagaland Unveils Three Major Initiatives to Boost Football and Nurture Young Talent
Three significant initiatives aimed at developing young local talent and enhancing the sporting landscape have been announced in Nagaland.
The initiatives—Nagaland Football Academy, the Chief Minister’s Sports Scholarships, and the Nagaland International Gold Cup—were unveiled by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio during the valedictory function of the inaugural Nagaland Super League (NSL) at Chumoukedima Football Stadium on Tuesday.
Rio stated that the Nagaland Football Academy aims to establish a state-supported professional football academy at Chumoukedima Football Stadium, in collaboration with an internationally reputed institution. The academy will nurture young talent and elevate Nagaland’s sporting landscape.
The Chief Minister’s Sports Scholarships will enable young talents to be selected for top football academies, with direct funding provided in collaboration with the Nagaland Olympic Association, affiliated sports associations, and national federations.
“Young talents identified by expert professionals will be sent to high-performance sports academies with the goal of competing for medals at the highest levels of sport,” Rio said.
Additionally, the Nagaland International Gold Cup will feature four local teams, four national teams, and four international teams. The event aims to sustain momentum and prepare local clubs for the I-League.
“The tournament will provide national and international exposure to our players within our own backyard, placing Nagaland on the football map. Moreover, ₹2 crore per annum will be awarded to teams that qualify for the National I-League,” Rio announced.
The Chief Minister urged both public and private stakeholders to invest in grassroots development, infrastructure, and capacity-building to establish Nagaland as a key player in Indian football.
“Sport is more than just competition—it embodies character, unity, resilience, and hope,” Rio said, adding that the NSL represents a promise to every young boy and girl in the state that with hard work and dedication, the world will take notice.
Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton affirmed that the government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rio, is committed to promoting sports across all disciplines.
He noted that young sports enthusiasts are being provided with opportunities to showcase and explore their talents while also contributing to the growth of sports and music in the state for the upliftment of local talent.
