Nagaland Urges Centre to Reconsider Scrapping Free Movement Regime
Northeast Desk, 17th May: Nagaland Minister and Government Spokesperson KG Kenye has called on the Government of India to reconsider its decision to abolish the Free Movement Regime (FMR). The State Assembly has passed a resolution requesting a review of the decision, reflecting the concerns of those living near the international border.
Addressing the press, Minister Kenye emphasized the widespread dissatisfaction among border residents following the FMR’s scrapping. “After the hue and cry of the people who are affected due to the scrapping of FMR, particularly those who are residing at the international border, the issue has been thoroughly debated in the assembly,” he stated. “The state assembly has passed a resolution asking the government of India to review the decision of scrapping of FMR.”
Kenye reassured the public that the state government is actively engaging with the central government on this issue. He urged non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and affected communities to remain patient while awaiting a considered decision from the Government of India. “Since the state government is taking all necessary action with the Government of India and the Government of India has also assured to reconsider the issue, the NGOs are requested to have patience till the Government of India takes a considered decision in this regard,” he added.
Additionally, Kenye announced the formation of a Political Affairs Committee (PAC) dedicated to addressing the Naga political issue. He called on all political parties to establish Political Consultative Committees (PCCs) to support the PAC in engaging with stakeholders effectively.
The state government’s actions reflect its commitment to addressing the challenges faced by border communities and resolving broader political issues affecting Nagaland.
