ZAKHAMA – What began as a routine workday at Zakhama Military Station nearly ended in tragedy for 57-year-old civilian electrician Shri Ram Sharma. A sudden electrical flare left him with deep second-degree burns across 16% of his body, a life-threatening injury that quickly spiralled into a medical crisis. Rushed to the Military Hospital in Zakhama in a critical state, Sharma was immediately placed in an isolation ward to safeguard against infection.
The initial prognosis was dire. Despite prompt treatment with silver-based dressings and a course of antibiotics, Sharma’s condition worsened. Subsequent tests uncovered a severe bacterial infection that was resisting standard medical interventions. In a remarkable display of expertise and ingenuity, the Army medical team, comprising doctors and paramedics, escalated his treatment. They administered high-grade antibiotics and employed advanced dressings utilising Collagen and Mupirocin, followed by Hydrocolloid Therapy and Skin Substitution – specialised procedures typically beyond the scope of a military hospital of its size.
Meticulous care was taken to protect his eyes, ears, and nose, crucial organs vulnerable to severe scarring. The medical staff also focused on minimising long-term damage, diligently applying glycerine-based dressings and coconut oil to promote healing and reduce marks. After 27 gruelling days in isolation, a period marked by both the patient’s fortitude and the medical team’s relentless efforts, Sharma made a full and remarkable recovery. His survival is being hailed as a powerful testament to the unwavering dedication and exceptional skill of the Army’s medical personnel, serving as a beacon of hope and resilience.
