Nation Mourns the Passing of Cinematic Icon Manoj Kumar, Aged 87
Entertainment: Prominent figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed deep sorrow and paid heartfelt tributes to the legendary actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who passed away on April 4th at the age of 87.
The veteran, known for his impactful films that highlighted social issues and instilled a sense of patriotism, breathed his last at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Ambani Hospital around 3:30 am, succumbing to age-related ailments.
Assam Chief Minister, reflecting on the enduring legacy of Kumar’s work, shared on his official X handle, “Even today, Manoj Kumar ji’s films inspire the countrymen and fill them with energy to dream new dreams. Many of my childhood memories are associated with the songs of his films. Whether an artist lives or not, his art remains immortal. Om Shanti.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his condolences via X, stating, “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films.” Modi emphasized that Kumar’s films ignited a spirit of national pride that would continue to inspire generations.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in his tribute, acknowledged the lasting impact Kumar had on the minds of people, writing on X, “Deeply saddened by the demise of distinguished actor Manoj Kumar Ji. He enriched Indian cinema with his phenomenal talent and left a lasting impact on the minds of people by inspiring the flame of patriotism in them.”
Aamir Khan, in a statement, described Kumar as “an institution,” expressing that he had learned immensely from watching his films, which often addressed significant social themes. He extended his heartfelt condolences to Kumar’s family.
Akshay Kumar hailed the late actor as “one of the biggest assets of our fraternity,” recalling how he grew up learning the importance of love and pride for the country from him.
Ajay Devgn shared a personal connection, remembering that Kumar gave his late father, Veeru Devgan, his first break as an action director. He highlighted Kumar’s films as “national emotions,” acknowledging his creative genius and unwavering patriotism.
Manoj Bajpayee recognized Kumar as a “pillar of Hindi cinema,” praising his art for celebrating the spirit of India, and offered his condolences to the family and admirers.
Karan Johar recalled a childhood memory of watching the rough cut of “Kranti” and recognized Kumar as a “cinema legend.”
Sonu Sood simply wrote, “Rip Manoj Kumar sir.”
Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar expressed his sadness, noting Kumar’s storytelling and song picturizations inspired national pride.
Filmmakers Zoya Akhtar, Vivek Agnihotri, Hansal Mehta, and Kunal Kohli also joined in mourning the loss of the cinematic icon.
