NCB Chief Meets Mizoram CM Amid Rising Drug Threat, Push for Stronger Border Security and Local Zonal Office

Aizawl: Amid growing concerns over drug trafficking along Mizoram’s porous border with Myanmar, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Director General Anurag Garg met with Chief Minister Lalduhoma in Aizawl to discuss urgent strategies to stem the tide of cross-border narcotics smuggling.

In the high-level meeting, both leaders underscored the critical need to fortify security infrastructure along the Indo-Myanmar border. According to an official statement, the NCB Chief raised alarm over the increasing number of drug trafficking cases and the rising prevalence of substance abuse within the state—issues that have placed Mizoram at the forefront of India’s narcotics challenge in the Northeast.

Garg proposed the establishment of a full-fledged NCB zonal office in Mizoram and emphasized the need for enhanced staffing, particularly personnel fluent in the local language, to effectively handle regional complexities. He also urged the state government to extend support for strengthening field-level coordination and intelligence sharing.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, highlighted the necessity of boosting both infrastructure and manpower along the international border to counter the flow of narcotics from South and Southeast Asian sources. He also informed the NCB chief about his proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs to establish a Mizo territorial army—an initiative aimed at augmenting border security along both the Myanmar and Bangladesh frontiers.

Lalduhoma requested the NCB to formally submit a detailed proposal outlining the bureau’s operational needs in Mizoram. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to collaborative action against the drug menace, which continues to threaten the state’s social fabric and border stability.
