NCERT Faces Criticism Over Mislabeling of Mukna Kangjei in Textbook

Northeast Desk, 29th April: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) came under fire for a significant error in one of its textbooks, where the indigenous game of Manipur, Mukna Kangjei, was mistakenly labeled as a popular game from Mizoram.

Published by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) under NCERT’s umbrella for the academic year 2023-2024, the textbook error has sparked demands for immediate corrections from concerned educational bodies.

The Education (S) Department Physical Education Teachers’ Association issued a press release expressing concern over the oversight and urging authorities to rectify the error promptly. Emphasizing the importance of accurate information in educational materials, particularly regarding cultural heritage and indigenous games, the association called for swift action.

The textbook, titled “Learning through Traditional Games,” incorrectly attributed Mukna Kangjei to Mizoram under the heading “Mizoram-Mukna Kangjei,” drawing strong objections from the people of Manipur.

Taking proactive steps, the association wrote to both the State Council of Educational Research and Training in New Delhi and NCERT New Delhi, urging them to acknowledge the mistake and make necessary corrections without delay.

Background of Mukna Kangjei:

Mukna Kangjei, also known as Khong Kangjei or foot hockey, is a popular sport primarily played in Manipur, India, resembling field hockey. Its origins date back to the prehistoric Hayichak era and hold significant cultural value in Manipuri heritage.

Legend has it that a young royal household boy named ‘Kangba’ played a crucial role in popularizing the game, leading to its recognition by King Kangba and the initiation of Kangjei games such as Kangjei and Sagol Kangjei.

The name “Khong Kangjei” derives from Meitei terms, symbolizing foot or wrestling (“khong”), a ball or round object (“kang”), and hitting (“jei”). This rich history underscores Mukna Kangjei’s importance, deserving accurate representation and recognition in educational materials.
