NCPCR Urges Meghalaya Government to Enroll Madrasa Students in Regular Schools

Northeast Desk, 23th June: Priyank Kanoongo, Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), has called on the Meghalaya government to integrate students studying in Madrasas into mainstream educational institutions.

In a statement to the press, Kanoongo emphasized that students in Madrasas receive education predominantly focused on religious practices, which may hinder their aspirations to pursue professional careers. He underscored the importance of formal education in equipping students with the necessary skills for daily life and future employment.

Additionally, Kanoongo urged the state government to conduct a survey of Madrasas in Ampati, South West Garo Hills district, to better understand their presence and functioning. Official data indicates that there are two Madrasas in East Khasi Hills district and three in West Garo Hills district, with a total of 494 students enrolled in these institutions.

The NCPCR chairman’s recommendations aim to ensure that all children in Meghalaya receive a comprehensive education that prepares them for a broad range of professional opportunities.
