NDPP Calls for Naga Unity, Urges Centre to Expedite Political Settlement

Kohima: Amid the ongoing Indo-Naga political dialogue, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has urged all Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) to unite in pursuit of an honourable and negotiated settlement. The party also called upon the Government of India to expedite the resolution in a manner that is inclusive, acceptable, and reflective of Naga history and aspirations.

At the 5th General Convention held in Kohima, the NDPP reaffirmed its commitment to the Naga political movement, recognizing the contributions of past and present leaders in shaping the aspirations of the Naga people for peace, recognition, and honour. The party underscored key historical milestones, including the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873, the Representation to the Simon Commission (1929), the Plebiscite of 1951, the Framework Agreement of 2015, and the Agreed Position of 2017, as affirmations of the unique political history of the Nagas.

The NDPP also expressed strong opposition to the abolition of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the construction of a border fence along the Indo-Myanmar border, warning that such actions threaten long-standing traditions, escalate tensions, and hamper peace negotiations. The party urged the Government of India to reconsider its decision, emphasizing the historical significance of cross-border movement among Naga communities.

On the economic front, the NDPP highlighted Nagaland’s potential as a key hub under India’s “Act East Policy”, envisioning the state as a gateway to ASEAN nations. It advocated for investments in entrepreneurship, information technology, artificial intelligence, incubation facilities, energy, agriculture, and sustainability to drive employment and economic growth. Additionally, it urged the revocation of the Protected/Restricted Area Permit (PAP/RAP) regime, citing its negative impact on tourism and industrial development.

The party emphasized the need for modernizing agriculture, calling for a shift from subsistence farming to large-scale production using advanced technology, blockchain integration, value addition, and organic farming. It also underscored the importance of youth empowerment, commending initiatives such as the Chief Minister’s Scholarship for Music & Arts, Dr. T. Ao State Sports Awards, and the Chief Minister’s Meritorious Students Scholarships. The success of the 25th Hornbill Festival was also highlighted as a milestone in promoting Nagaland’s global tourism potential.

Reiterating its commitment to a lasting Indo-Naga political settlement, the NDPP called upon all stakeholders to work towards a resolution that ensures peace, progress, and economic stability for the Naga people.
