Nearly 2,000 Recruits Graduate from Lachit Borphukan Police Academy, Strengthening Manipur Police Force

Imphal: In a significant boost to law enforcement in the violence-hit state of Manipur, 1,946 recruits graduated from the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy (LBPA) on Monday. The event was graced by Assam and Manipur Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

The recruits underwent an intensive 44-week basic training program, which began in January 2024 at the Assam Police Academy. Initially, 1,984 recruits joined the program, but two recruits tragically passed away due to medical conditions, and others opted out for personal or medical reasons.

Recognizing the challenging law and order situation in Manipur, the training program was designed to prepare recruits for high-risk environments. The curriculum emphasized:

  • Endurance Training: Including long-distance speed marches and tactical drills.
  • Combat Skills: Focusing on unarmed combat (UAC) and firing proficiency.
  • Crowd Control and Disaster Management: Equipping recruits with skills for managing volatile situations and emergencies.
  • National Integration and Cohesion: Special focus on fostering mental toughness, esprit de corps, and unit cohesiveness among the recruits.

The recruits were drawn from nine Manipur-based India Reserve Battalions and six Manipur Rifles battalions, reflecting a diverse community profile.

The recruits represented Manipur’s demographic diversity:

  • 62% Meitei
  • 12% Kuki
  • 26% Naga and other tribes

The program also addressed significant fitness challenges, with 50% of recruits initially classified as overweight, including 5% as obese. By the end of training, only 5% remained overweight, primarily due to chronic medical conditions.

Additionally, 31% of recruits were aged between 30-40 years, presenting unique challenges for trainers.

Since 2022, LBPA has revamped its training methodology to align with contemporary policing needs. The approach integrates scientific techniques and practical applications to ensure recruits are well-prepared for the evolving demands of law enforcement.

The successful graduation of this batch marks another milestone in strengthening the Manipur Police force and underscores the critical role of the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in shaping the region’s law enforcement capabilities.
