Neelim Mahanta arrested for anti-dam graffiti, demand to release him increases
Guwahati: Nitizens took social media by a storm for the immediate release of Neelim Mahanta, graffiti artist after he was arrested from his home in Assam’s Lakhimpur for an anti-dam graffiti that he painted on the ‘Wall of Harmony’ in Arunachal Pradesh’s Itanagar
The hashtags, “#ReleaseNeelimMahanta”, “#StandwithNeelimMahanta” “FreeNeelim” are creating waves on social media.
Graffiti artist Neelim Mahanta, from Lakhimpur was arrested by Arunachal Police for an anti-dam graffiti he sprayed on the ‘Wall of Harmony’ in Itanagar.
Police from Itanagar arrived to his home in Lakhimpur and took him to the Police Station, according to sources.
Mahanta was invited to Arunachal Pradesh to spray graffiti in protest of the dam building in Dibang.
In reaction to a protest in Arunachal Pradesh over a projected 57000 MW Mega Dam, the graffiti was made.
In the meantime, the Arunachal Pradesh Police Department has failed to explain why Neelim was imprisoned.
Furthermore, AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi and local organisations have asked that Mahanta be released immediately by the governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
