NEHARI, Brahmaputra Board Hosts Workshop on “Model Study for River Engineering Works” in Collaboration with CWPRS, Pune

Guwahati, Assam: Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Ranbir Singh, IAS (Retd.), Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board, the North Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Research Institute (NEHARI) successfully organised a five-day training workshop titled “Model Study for River Engineering Works” from 24th to 28th June 2025. The event was conducted in collaboration with the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Subashisa Dutta from IIT-Guwahati, who emphasised the importance of model studies in river engineering and their crucial role in achieving practical and measurable outcomes. The opening session witnessed the presence of distinguished scientists from CWPRS including Sh. Prasad S. Kunjeer, Sh. Naved Ali Syed, Sh. B. Raghuram Singh (all Scientist ‘D’), and Smt. Snehal B. Tayade (Scientist ‘B’), as well as Dr. Ranjit Deka, Director of NEHARI.

The five-day intensive training featured a mix of theoretical lectures and practical hands-on sessions focusing on:

  • Hydraulic and numerical modelling fundamentals
  • Design of hydraulic structures and construction material considerations
  • GIS and HEC-HMS software for catchment delineation
  • Application of RAS Mapper for setting up numerical models
  • Utilisation of the indigenous BRAHMA Model

Participants engaged in detailed simulations using both 1D and 2D models via HEC-RAS and the BRAHMA model, with guidance from eminent guest faculty from CWPRS and IIT-Guwahati, including Dr. Arup Sarma and team.

A special yoga session was organised on the second day by NEHARI, led by instructor Mrs. Gitima Deka. The session saw enthusiastic participation from both faculty and trainees, promoting holistic well-being alongside technical learning.

The event concluded with a valedictory session chaired by Dr. Ranjit Deka. Dr. Gaurav Talukdar from IIT-Delhi addressed the participants, sharing insights on the future of water resource management through model studies. Dr. Deka, in his closing remarks, underscored the practical relevance of hydraulic modelling in policy planning and engineering solutions.

Certificates were awarded to 21 participants from the Brahmaputra Board and Water Resources Departments of North Eastern states including Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, BTC, and the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, West Bengal, marking the successful completion of the training.
