Neiphiu Rio Takes Oath as Nagaland CM

Guwahati: The National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) leader Neiphiu Rio was sworn in as the new chief minister of Nagaland on Tuesday in Kohima.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Federal Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP leader JP Nadda, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, and state Governor La Ganesan all attended the swearing-in ceremony.

In the meantime, Nagaland’s Deputy Chief Ministers Taditui Rangkau Zeliang and Yanthungo Patton took the oath of office.

According to information released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday, the ruling NDPP-BJP maintained its hold on power in the Nagaland election, winning 37 of the assembly’s 60 seats.

Congress leader Seyievilie Sachu was defeated by Neiphiu Rio for the Northern Angami-II seat. Rio received 15,646 votes compared to his opponent’s meagre total of 1,078.

The results of the assembly elections in the three northeastern states demonstrated the BJP’s sustained dominance in the formerly heartland of the Congress. The result ensured that none of the three northeastern states’ governments will change as a result of the results announced on Thursday. Elections for the three states’ assemblies were held last month.

Most exit-poll estimates in the state predicted that the BJP would be ahead of its opponents since it had made history in 2018 by reclaiming the state from Left-wing parties.

The Northeast state saw a triangular contest as Congress and CPIM, which have been arch rivals for years, stitched a pre-poll alliance to defeat the ruling BJP.

Earlier today, Conrad Sangma took oath as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya in the presence of PM Modi, Amit Shah, JP Nadda and CM Sarma.
