Nepal Plane Crash: PM Prachanda Visits Families of Victims

Guwahati: Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Thursday promised the families of the victims of the Yeti Airlines plane crash that he would “expedite” the procedure to get the corpses of the deceased to the families as soon as possible.

The Prime Minister spoke with the family members of those who perished in the unfortunate accident because he was unable to travel to the scene at the time of the disaster and told them that the process would be sped up.

Notably, the families and loved ones are waiting at the mortuary to receive the bodies.

“PM Dahal promised the families to hand over the bodies as soon as possible expediting the procedures. The hospital can ask the government for additional resources in case they need to expedite it,” according to an official statement of the PM secretariat.

The unfortunate plane, which had 72 people on board, including five Indian citizens, crashed into a river canyon on Sunday as it was making its final approach to Pokhara, a tourist destination in central Nepal.

Moreover, 22 autopsied bodies were being sent to relatives in Kathmandu, according to a statement from Yeti Airlines.

“Among the 49 bodies brought to Kathmandu, 22 of them are being handed over to their families after the post-mortem while the post-mortem on the remaining bodies is ongoing. Twenty-two bodies that were post-mortemed at the Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences have already been handed over to their families. Also, we would like to inform you that the search for a missing person is ongoing,” the official statement of Yeti Airlines read.

On Wednesday, rescuers found another crash victim’s body. 71 bodies have now been recovered in total. However, there is still an active search for the last one.

“One more body has been found among the two missing persons in the Yeti Airlines plane crash that occurred in Pokhara on January 15, 2023. The total number of dead bodies has reached 71. It is reported that the search for the remaining one is ongoing. Search and Rescue Coordination Center,” the Nepal Civil Aviation Authority said in an official release.

According to Sudarshan Bartaula, a Yeti Airlines spokeswoman, the ATR 72 aircraft crashed between the old airport and the Pokhara International Airport, according to a report published on Sunday in the Kathmandu Post.

Earlier, representatives of the Civil Aviation Authority received the black box of the Yeti Airlines aircraft from the Nepal Army.

A black box is a flight data recorder that uses a unique algorithm to store all flight data.
