New Digital Portal Unveiled for Arms Licences in Sensitive Areas
Guwahati: In a landmark move ahead of the nation’s 79th Independence Day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a new digital portal today, streamlining the process for indigenous residents of “sensitive areas” to apply for arms licences.
The initiative, according to the Chief Minister, is a strategic step to bolster community participation in maintaining peace and order across the state. Sarma clarified that the government’s role is not to provide arms but to facilitate the legal acquisition of licences strictly under the provisions of the Indian Arms Act.
He said this measure is designed to empower responsible citizens to act as a crucial support system for the state administration. The Chief Minister emphasised that the issuance of licences will be a highly selective and rigorous process, with a multi-layered verification system in place. Prospective applicants must meet a strict set of criteria, including a clean criminal record and sound mental health.
They will also be required to undergo mandatory arms training and provide compelling reasons detailing their vulnerability to be considered for a licence.
Sarma’s announcement signals a proactive approach by the state government to address security concerns in specific regions, entrusting a section of the citizenry with the means to protect themselves and their communities, subject to the strictest legal scrutiny.
