New Plant Species, Petrocosmea arunachalense Discovered in Arunachal Pradesh

Researchers from the Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre of the Botanical Survey of India have made a significant discovery in the Mandala region of West Kameng district. They have identified a new plant species, Petrocosmea arunachalense, belonging to the family Gesneriaceae. This find is particularly noteworthy as it marks only the second known species of the genus Petrocosmea in India.

The discovery highlights the remarkable biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh, renowned for its diverse flora. Petrocosmea arunachalense joins the extensive catalog of unique plant species found in the state, underscoring the importance of continuous conservation efforts.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed his enthusiasm and congratulations via a tweet on the social media platform X, stating, “The rich flora of our State never fails to amaze us! Congratulations to the researchers from Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre of @bsi_moefcc on discovering a new plant species named Petrocosmea arunachalense. Belonging to the family Gesneriaceae, this is only the second known species of the genus Petrocosmea found in the country. Let us keep preserving the hidden treasures of nature.”

The Chief Minister’s remarks emphasize the significance of safeguarding Arunachal Pradesh’s natural heritage. The discovery of Petrocosmea arunachalense not only advances scientific knowledge of the region’s biodiversity but also underscores the presence of undiscovered natural wonders.
