NHRC Asks Report from Assam Police on Custodial Death of Nagaland Man

Guwahati: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has requested an action taken report (ATR) from the Sivasagar Police of Assam in response to the custodial death of a Nagaland resident.

According to reports, the Sivasagar superintendent of police received the notice for the ATR on Friday and has four weeks to respond.

The Indigenous Lawyers Association of India (ILAI), a non-governmental organisation, filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in New Delhi on August 25 regarding the death of E Henveih Phom, a resident of Nagaland, who was allegedly tortured while being held at Geleky Police Station in the Sivasagar district a few days ago.

In accordance with the ILAI’s complaint, Phom and another woman were detained by the Assam Police on August 16 as they were in route to Geleky.

Phom was detained by the law following his arrest. Five days later, the complaint claimed that he passed away under “strange circumstances.”

The 35-year-old Phom is a resident of Anaki-C village in Mokokchung district of Nagaland.

According to the ILAI, Phom’s family members claim that the deceased was tortured while in police custody at the Gelekey police station, which is what ultimately caused his death.
