NIA Held Militant Involved in Assam Rifles Ambush in Manipur

Guwahati: The Manipur Naga People’s Front (MNPF) terrorist who was involved in an ambush on the convoy of the Commandant of the Assam Rifles in November 2021 has been arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The NIA arrested the fugitive suspect in Yaingangpokpi village in  Imphal East district of Manipur on November 5.

The terrorist has been identified as Machukring Zamshim Shimray alias Ningkham.

A group of armed terrorists attacked the convoy of the 46th Battalion Assam Rifles on November 13, 2021 in Sialsih village in the Churachandpur district of Manipur.

As many as seven people including Commanding Officer Colonel Viplav Tripathi, his wife and minor son, and four other Assam Rifles personnel were killed and six other personnel were injured in the attack.

A case was filed at the Singngat police station in Churachandpur under numerous provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Arms Act, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Explosive Substances Act as a result of the ambush.

The NIA re-registered the case and began an investigation on November 27 of last year.

The NIA had also announced a cash reward of Rs 4 lakhs against Shimray.

The accused was produced before the NIA Special Court on Sunday.
