NIA Raids Eight States in Pakistan-Linked Espionage Probe, Assam Under Scanner

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday launched a massive crackdown across eight states, including Assam, conducting extensive search operations at 15 locations in connection with a Pakistan-linked espionage case. The coordinated raids targeted premises of individuals suspected of collaborating with Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs), significantly escalating India’s efforts to dismantle cross-border spy networks.

The pan-India operation saw NIA teams fanning out across Delhi, Mumbai in Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Assam, and West Bengal. This widespread sweep underscores the perceived depth and reach of the espionage ring operating within the country, funnelling sensitive information to Pakistan-based handlers.

During the meticulously planned searches, NIA sleuths seized a cache of electronic gadgets, highly sensitive financial documents, and other incriminating materials. These crucial pieces of evidence are currently undergoing intensive examination by the agency, aiming to unearth further clues regarding the operational mechanics of the espionage racket and its role in a larger anti-India terror conspiracy.

Initial investigations by the NIA reveal that the suspects targeted in Friday’s raids were actively engaged with Pakistani operatives, serving as financial conduits to facilitate espionage activities within India. Their role is believed to have been pivotal in the clandestine transfer of funds, a key component of sustaining such illicit operations.

The current case was formally registered by the NIA on May 20, following the arrest of an accused individual. This individual, under interrogation, admitted to sharing classified information with PIOs since 2023 and receiving illicit funds through various conduits in India in exchange for compromising national security. The arrest provided the critical breakthrough that led to the subsequent widespread search operation.

The anti-terror agency continues its rigorous investigation into the matter, with the case registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, the Official Secrets Act 1923, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967. The NIA remains committed to rooting out all elements involved in this intricate espionage network.
